Carol L. Brown, M.D.


Carol L. Brown, M.D., is a board-certified Gynecologic Oncologist who is the Associate Cancer Center Director for Diversity and Outreach at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She holds academic appointments as Attending Surgeon and Member, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cornell University Weill Medical College, New York, NY.


Dr. Brown’s career is focused in three areas; providing high-quality and compassionate surgical care to women with gynecologic cancer; the reduction and elimination of cancer health disparities experienced by medically underserved populations; and promoting public policy to increase awareness, improve care, and increase research funding for gynecologic and other cancers both locally and nationally. Dr. Brown was honored to speak about cancer disparities and the Cancer Moonshot at the White House United State of Women Summit, and to attend the Cancer Moonshot Summit in Washington DC, in June, 2016. Dr. Brown was also honored to give the 12th annual Minorities in Cancer Research Jane Cooke Wright Memorial Lecture at the American Association of Cancer Research annual meeting in Washington DC in April 2017.


Dr. Brown currently holds national leadership positions including President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO), Co-Chair of the NRG Oncology Health Disparities Committee, and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Biden Cancer Initiative. She is the 50th President, and the first African-American female to lead the SGO, an organization whose 2000 members are dedicated to caring for women with gynecologic cancer and advancing research in the field.  She is a member of other professional societies including the National Medical Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Medical Association, and the American Association for Cancer Research. Dr. Brown is a Fellow of both the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Surgeons, and serves an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.


Dr. Brown ‘s honors and awards include: Harvard University’s Joseph Garrison Parker Prize; Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society; the Malcolm X Memorial scholarship from Columbia University; and the American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Career Development Award. Dr. Brown was named one of ”America’s Leading Physicians” by Black Enterprise magazine in 2001 and 2008; listed in “Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area ” by Castle Connolly 2008-2018, and listed in “ Best Doctors in America” from 2001-2017. Dr. Brown has appeared as a medical expert on CNN, BET, The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, ABC World News Tonight, and the CBS Evening News, and has been quoted in Essence Magazine, Redbook Magazine, and the New York Times. 


Dr. Brown graduated with honors from Harvard University and received her medical degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. She completed her clinical and research fellowships in Gynecologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York where she has been a faculty member in the Department of Surgery for 24 years.
