Shanel D. Lewis, MPA

 

Shanel is originally from Willingboro, New Jersey and raised in York County, Virginia.  She is a graduate of Old Dominion University where I earned her Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice and Sociology and her Masters of Public Administration degree. While in college she interned with the Norfolk Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and volunteered at a domestic abuse shelter in Portsmouth where she primarily worked with at-risk youth. Upon graduating college, she moved to Hampton, Virginia and worked for two years as a Neighborhood Development Associate for City of Hampton's Community Development Department. In that role she had the privilege of working with the Hampton Youth Commission to uplift the voices of young people in local policy decisions and worked to education the commission on the power of their voice. After building strong relationships in many Hampton neighborhoods and with youth across the city, she was promoted to the Youth Violence Prevention Office to focus her efforts on improving outcomes for young people particularly men and boys of color. In this role she worked to develop a pilot summer basketball league, managed a mini-grant program for grassroots organizations and expanded the summer youth employment program. Shanel relocated to Richmond Virginia in 2017 to serve as the Youth Violence Prevention Program Coordinator for the Richmond City Health District. She coordinates and aligns youth violence prevention efforts across the city as the Director of the Inspire Workgroup, the Youth Violence Prevention Coalition in the City of Richmond. She works to connect resources that increase the capacity of organizations that are serving at risk youth ages 10-24. Shanel strongly believes in collective impact and the power of youth voice. Her passion is to foster environments that support youth-adult partnerships where youth are empowered to be change agents in their communities. Additionally, she is active in the community as a dance and cheerleading for a local non-profit organization.
