Silvia Degli Esposti, MD,

Dr. Silvia D. Degli Esposti, is the Director of the Center for Women's Digestive Health in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and an associate professor of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, VCU School of Medicine in Richmond, VA.

She comes from the Alpert Medical School of Brown University where she was the Director of the Center for Women’s Gastrointestinal Medicine and served as Director of the fellowship pathway in Women's Gastrointestinal Diseases at the Medical School. Degli Esposti graduated summa cum laude from the University of Bologna Medical School in Bologna, Italy. She completed her residency and fellowship at Brown University.

Degli Esposti is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. She is nationally and internationally known for her pioneer work on gender medicine. In 1996 she opened the first comprehensive Center for Gastrointestinal Disease in women and the first “women only” endoscopy at Women and Infant Hospital in Providence.  ,. Since then for over 15 years she was a physician in the division of Obstetric Medicine taking care of women with gastrointestinal disorders in pregnancy. Moreover she led the first women’s health track in the fellowship training in Gastroenterology at Brown University. In this capacity she taught and mentored several future leaders in the field of women’s health. Her clinical and research interests revolved around female gastrointestinal problems and include liver and gastrointestinal diseases in pregnancy, pelvic floor dysfunction, fecal incontinence, dietary allergies, celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease in young women.
