  •                               Rodolfo J. Oviedo, MD, FACS, FASMBS was born in Nicaragua and moved to the United States at the age of 18 years of age, where he and his family established themselves in Houston, Texas. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Saint Thomas in Houston, TX, in 2003, and was the commencement speaker of his graduating class. Dr. Oviedo then attended medical school at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he graduated at the top of his class in 2007. He became a General Surgery Resident at Houston Methodist Hospital at the Texas Medical Center, where he graduated after his Chief Resident year in 2013.
  •                               He joined the ranks of teaching faculty at Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee, FL, as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery after residency, where he worked as a minimally-invasive general and bariatric surgeon at Capital Regional Surgical Associates of the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) from 2013 to 2017. It was during this period in Tallahassee, FL, that he began to develop his skills as a robotic surgeon and completed more than 200 general and bariatric surgery cases, from simple to complex. Subsequently, Dr. Oviedo decided to pursue a Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Fellowship at Baptist Health South Florida at South Miami Hospital, Baptist Hospital of Miami, and West Kendall Baptist Hospital from 2017 to 2018. Including his Tallahassee and Miami experience, Dr. Oviedo has completed more than 600 robotic cases to date. After graduating from fellowship training in Miami, FL, Dr. Oviedo took a position as a metabolic and bariatric surgeon at Valley Health Metabolic & Bariatric Program at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA, where he is building a successful robotic metabolic and bariatric surgery program with his team.
  •                               Dr. Oviedo is a board-certified and fellowship-trained metabolic and bariatric, robotic and laparoendoscopic surgeon. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery (DABS), a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS), and an Overseas Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in London, UK. Dr. Oviedo serves on multiple committees at the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). He has published numerous research manuscripts and book chapters, including the first robotic general surgery case series published in the international surgical literature from an American community hospital perspective.
