Emily B Rivet MD MBA FACS FASCRS is a colon and rectal surgeon with clinical interests in minimally invasive approaches for treatment of colon and rectal disease, surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease, malignant conditions of the colon, rectum and anus, screening and diagnostic colonoscopy, and benign anal and rectal problems.  Dr. Rivet enjoyed a successful practice in the community for seven years and held leadership positions including Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery at Maryview Medical Center, Physician Representative to the Commission on Cancer and Physician Leader for Palliative Care at Maryview Medical Center.   She is a member of the Surgical Palliative Care Committee of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Quality Assessment and Safety Committee.  She serves as Co Chair of the In Patient Pain Management Committee for VCU Health system and as physician champion for surgical resident education in endoscopy. 
Dr. Rivet completed her medical degree at Washington University, where she also did general surgery residency and colon and rectal surgery fellowship.  She obtained her undergraduate degree in the History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Science and Medicine at the University of Chicago.  During her residency, she did an MBA at Washington University, focusing on economics and logistics in health care. 
She is also board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and also attends on the palliative medicine service, both on the in-patient consult service and the in-patient palliative medicine unit.   
Dr. Rivet’s research focus is the integration of palliative medicine into the care of surgical patients.    In addition, she is interested in medical and surgical ethics and serves on the ethics committee at VCU.  Lastly, she is concerned with issues of resource allocation in health care and how these intersect with the practices of surgery, end of life care and ethical medical practice.
