Diane Hanson-Johnson is a Pediatric Patient Advocate at VCU Health and holds a Master’s Degree in Management and Leadership from American Sentinel University, where she is presently studying for her DNP in Executive Leadership. Diane was selected to the National Daisy Award Registry in 2018 for her special care for an autistic patient during his surgical experience at VCU where she worked for 13 years in the PACU. It was during this time she became interested in staff turnover and researched ways to help with retaining valued employees. It is because of this research that she has become passionate about keeping staff engaged, and became interested in a Mentoring Program to assist with retention. 

 

Diane is a member of the Retention and Recognition Council at VCU and was also a finalist at the 2019 VNA “Excellence in Patient Experience” Awards. In addition, she holds a CPAN certification and is a member of the ANA and VNA. She lives in Williamsburg with her husband and Jack Russell terrier named Bella. She commutes 45 miles each way to work at VCU because of her passion for patient excellence and staff retention. Diane will be performing a study this year to determine an impact on nurse Meaning and Joy in Work through post-shift surveys that she has developed.
