Dr. James O’Connor is a native of Lancaster, PA. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA with a B.S. in Chemistry. He attended medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine in Richmond, VA, where he also completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He subsequently moved to Birmingham, AL where he completed a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. O’Connor returned to VCU in 2019 after completion of his post graduate training to join the faculty of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine as an assistant professor. His clinical interests include advanced lung disease, palliative care for chronic non-malignant lung disease, critical care medicine, and rapid response. His research interests include incorporating palliative care in chronic non-malignant lung disease, rapid response systems, and medical education. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, two children, and their Corgi Wallace.
