Dr. Patricia Lange received her MD degree from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 1996. She completed her clinical training in general surgery at The University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill in 2003, which included two years of basic science work under an NIH Trauma Training Grant. In 2005, she finished a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at Children’s National Medical Center and was recruited back to UNC as Assistant Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics. Dr. Lange was promoted to Associate Professor in 2011 and joined VCU Department of Surgery in 2012. She is board certified in Pediatric Surgery and General Surgery and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, The American Association of Pediatrics, and the American Pediatric Surgery Association (APSA).

Dr. Lange received Teacher of the Year awards at both UNC and VCU and was named a Jack’s Summer Scholar Valuable Mentor at VCU. Annual teaching evaluations by students and residents consistently surpass evaluations of her peers. She has developed curriculum for and led educational courses for students, residents, and faculty at the local and national level. She has mentored students and trainees that have matched in competitive general surgery and pediatric surgery programs. Dr. Lange currently serves as Associate Program Director for VCU’s general surgery residency program. At the national level, she served on the APSA Education committee and has co-chaired the APSA Family Education subcommittee.

Dr. Lange’s clinical focus is on general pediatric surgical care as well as surgical quality and safety. She has been named to Richmond Top Docs the last four years. In 2015, she was named the Surgeon Champion for VCU’s National Surgical Quality Improvement Program-Pediatrics. Additionally, she serves as the director of Performance Improvement and Patient Safety for the Children’s Surgery Program at VCU and at the national level, serves on the APSA Quality and Safety Committee. 

Dr. Lange’s research and scholarly work focuses on the use of simulation to improve clinical performance and team communication.  She leads quarterly perioperative team training courses at VCU and has developed and facilitated educational courses on teamwork in simulation for regional and international conferences.
