Joshua Barclay, MD

Dr. Barclay received his medical degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. He trained in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville and completed Palliative Medicine and Health Services Research fellowships at Duke University in Durham, NC. He joined the faculty at UVA in 2008 and has worked as both a hospitalist and Palliative Medicine doctor there. He is currently the Inpatient Director of Palliative Medicine and the Associate Program Director for the Hospice and Palliative Fellowship.


Dr. Barclay is active in education at UVA and developed the fellowship program there. He currently works as a coach in the Foundations of Clinical Medicine course. His research currently focuses on addressing substance abuse and diversion in palliative care patients, and he and Dr. Leslie Blackhall co-founded the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine’s (AAHPM) Substance Abuse and Diversion Special Interest Group. He has presented regionally and nationally on this topic.
