Antonio Abbate, MD, PhD

Dr. Abbate received his Medical Degree from the University Campus Bio-Medico of Rome, Italy. He then completed his clinical training in Cardiovascular Medicine at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Rome, Italy, and also earned a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Cardiology. He then relocated to Richmond, Virginia, USA, and completed a Residency in Internal Medicine at the Virginia Commonwealth University and joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2007. He is now a Tenured Professor of Medicine and holds the endowed ‘James C. Roberts, Esq.’ Professorship in Cardiology. Dr. Abbate is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Medicine and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and European Society of Cardiology.  Dr. Abbate serves as an attending in the coronary intensive care unit, general cardiology and cardio-oncology, and Medical Director of the Clinical Research Unit. Dr Abbate’s research focuses on the role of inflammation in cardiac diseases.
