Pamela Mahan is a Critical Care Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Practitioner at McGuire Holmes Veterans Administration Medical Center in Richmond, VA.  She received her diploma in nursing from Bon Secours Memorial School of Nursing in 2007 and Master of Science in Nursing specializing in Nursing Education in 2013. Prior to working as an NPD Practitioner, she was a staff nurse in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit for seven years. Her passion that led her to becoming an educator was to assist nursing staff to grow professionally and apply current and evidence-based practices.

She currently serves as the Nursing Education Council Chairperson and on several interdisciplinary committees.  Over the past several years she has been instrumental in collaborating to develop multiple nurse-driven protocols.  One of her greatest accomplishments was being recognized by the Joint Commission (JC) for her research in clinical alarm management.  The Clinical Alarm committee’s work was published in the Joint Commission’s the Source NewsletterMcGuire Veteran Affairs Improves the Safety of Clinical Alarms and in Topics for Patient Safety (TIPS) Newsletter for the Veteran’s Healthcare AdministrationClinical Alarm Reduction: A Method for Success; and a series of podcasts for the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS). She is member of American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the Greater Richmond Chapter where she serves as the monthly Programs chairperson and on the Odyssey Committee, American Nurses’ Association, Association for Nursing Professional Development, and Sigma Theta TauOne of her professional goals is to mentor nurses so they can continue to grow the profession.
