Lori Sweeney, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VAMC in Richmond, Virginia.  Dr. Sweeney completed her medical degree at the Virginia Commonwealth School of Medicine (VCU) and was a Fellow in Endocrinology at the Medical College of Virginia.  Dr. Sweeney has been working with transgender veterans at the McGuire VAMC since 2009 and established a transgender care clinic within the endocrinology department in 2014.  In addition to her dedicated work with transgender veterans at the VA, she has also held numerous medical and faculty appointments at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center over the last two decades.  Dr. Sweeney's current research interests include cardiovascular disease prevention in transgender patients and lipid abnormalities associated with gender reaffirming hormone therapy.  Dr. Sweeney is the recipient of several research and teaching awards.   Furthermore, she has made contributions to the field of endocrinology through her peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and book chapters.  Last, but certainly not least, Dr. Sweeney has  had a distinguished Career in the US Army, including deployment to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom where she served as a front line physician.  She is the receipt of multiple military honors to include four Army Commendations Awards.
