Stefan Leichtle, MD, FACS

Dr. Stefan Leichtle is an Acute Care Surgeon and Associate Professor of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, VA. His clinical practice focuses on trauma surgery and surgical critical care. He is also currently pursuing an Executive MBA degree at The Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University.


Dr. Leichtle's academic interests focus on quality improvement and the effective implementation of evidence-based guidelines in clinical practice. He is involved in multi-disciplinary research in critical care and traumatic brain injury, and he is the clinical liaison and a Department of Defense-funded co-investigator in translational research on the development of novel strategies for the resuscitation of hemorrhagic shock. He has (co-)authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, books, and book chapters. Dr. Leichtle is the Program Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at VCU and Medical Director of the Trauma & Burn ICU. He has a strong interest in health care as a system and is engaged in surgical advocacy as Issues Chair of the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and Vice-Chair for the Committee on Trauma in Virginia.
