George Smallfield III, M.D., MSPH, serves as an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and

Nutrition. Smallfield earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During his fellowship, Smallfield earned his Master of Science in Public Health with a focus on health care policy and organization. Dr. Smallfield specializes in Barrett’s esophagus, reflux, esophageal cancer and gastric varices. His recent publications involve patient reported outcomes following treatment for Barrett’s; cyanoacrylate after audible Doppler assessment for gastric varices and decreasing rebleeding in LVAD patients. His current research projects include a multicentered assessment of cryoablation for esophageal cancer, a multicentered assessment comparing on training curves in treating Barrett’s esophagus and a lower esophageal pacemaker for treatment of GERD.
