Dr. Rittmann received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. He received his medical residency training from West Virginia University where he specialized in global health, and fellowship training at VCU. During his fellowship he also received a Master of Public Health. From there, he became an Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and the Director of Infection Prevention at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. In 2022, he returned to VCU as an Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases, and Associate Hospital Epidemiologist. He is an active member of the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America Research Committee, and the medical co director of the Virginia Infection Prevention Training Center. His areas of interest include HAI prevention, surgical site infections, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention education.
