Biosketch – Melissa Bui, MD

 

Dr. Bui received her MD degree from the University of Virginia (2010), and then completed her residency in Psychiatry (2014) and fellowship in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (2015) from Brigham and Women’s Hospital before joining the faculty from 2015-2017. During that time Dr. Bui served as the inaugural Associate Program Director for the BWH/HMS Psychiatry Residency Program as well as the Director of Critical Care Psychiatry. In 2017 Dr. Bui and her family relocated to central VA where she served as the Director of Consultation Psychiatry for Centra Health from 2017-2020. In 2020 Dr. Bui began a position as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at VCU. Effective July 1, 2024 she was promoted to Associate Professor of Psychiatry. She is board certified in Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.

Dr. Bui’s research focuses on proactive psychiatric consultation for delirium among critically ill patients, examining clinical, equity, safety and financial outcomes. She also serves as the Primary Investigator of a pilot of interdisciplinary prevention for delirium in a medical unit. She is also developing a Delirium Simulation module for 3rd year Medical Students. Dr. Bui has served as a peer reviewer and mentors many students and residents each year. She is a founding member of the Critical Care Psychiatry SIG through ACLP, and currently chairs that group.

Dr. Bui has played substantial roles in the medical school, residency and fellowship at VCU. She has contributed significantly to the organization of elements of clinical training at VCU, and also participates in and leads numerous clinical, research, educational and administratively focused committees. She has won numerous student and resident teaching awards and has been regularly recognized as a “Top Doc” in Richmond and the state of Virginia.
