We have been closely monitoring the development of COVID-19 in our community and throughout the United States. In order to safeguard the health and well-being of our learners, faculty, staff and communities, we have made the decision to change the format of the Palliative Care Symposium to an online virtual event this year. No live in-person sessions will be held.

With the increased risk of exposure to COVID-19, containment measures, travel restrictions, and the need for health care providers to be in their facilities and in their communities, this change of format is necessary.

The Palliative Care Symposium will address the interprofessional team on topics such as: communication related to serious illness, managing non-pain symptoms, utilization of telehealth technology, bereavement support, and resiliency for health care professionals.

1. Identify symptoms and proper treatment for patients with progressive illness.
2. Promote the appropriate and effective use of telehealth technology in providing patient care.
3. Explain the importance of assessing and considering code status with patients prior to surgery.
4. Discuss interprofessional collaboration in managing serious illness based on care model case studies.

VCU Health maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 5.75 continuing education credits.
