Overview

The 6th Annual VCU Massey-CMH Cancer Symposium is occurring in South Hill, VA on Saturday, September 29, 2018 to accommodate local/ regional healthcare professionals (primary care physicians, specialty physicians, pharmacists, psychologists, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, social work, technologists, etc.) specializing in General Medicine and Oncology.

VCU Health Continuing Medical Education designates this live activity for a maximum of 4.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

Objectives
  1. Discuss prognostic factors in early breast cancer
  2. Describe the role of gene expression profiles in management of early breast cancer
  3. Cite evidence from literature surrounding use of hormonal therapy vs chemotherapy for women with early stage hormone positive breast cancer
  4. Discuss the BIRADS classifications and appropriate follow up based on radiology recommendations
  5. Identify various methods of tissue diagnosis, including but not limited to fine needle aspiration, core needle biopsy and excisional biopsy and appropriate use of each method based on evidence based guidelines
  6. Outline a management algorithm for new breast masses
  7. Identify the most common indications for radiotherapy in breast cancer
  8. Describe the fundamental treatment process and typical side effects for a patient receiving radiotherapy
  9. Distinguish between the common radiotherapy types and terminology (such as external beam, brachytherapy, stereotactic, DIBH, hypofractionation)
  10. Recognize current screening guidelines and recommendations
  11. Diagnose and workup patients appropriately
  12. Assess treatment options for both local and metastatic prostate cancer
  13. Articulate the clinical staging system commonly used to classify pancreatic cancer patients and associated prognosis for each clinical stage
  14. Determine the scientific rationale for standard therapeutic pathways relevant to resectable, locally advanced, and metastatic pancreatic cancers based on the latest evidence
  15. Describe the latest advances in biological understanding of pancreatic cancer that has informed the development of novel therapeutics for pancreatic cancer
  16. Discuss the risk factors, clinical presentations, possible mechanisms of CIPN
  17. Describe how patients can have improved health status and outcomes when educated about how to live with CIPN, as well as how to prevent it
  18. Differentiate ways to treat CIPN once it has developed
