Overview

We have been closely monitoring the development of COVID-19 in our community and throughout the United States. In order to safeguard the health and well-being of our learners, faculty, staff and communities, we have made the decision to change the format of the Advances in Breastfeeding conference to an online virtual event this year. No live in-person sessions will be held.

With the increased risk of exposure to COVID-19, containment measures, travel restrictions, and the need for health care providers to be in their facilities and in their communities, this change of format is necessary.

The Richmond Breastfeeding Task Force exists to realize benefits to the health of the community when the mother-infant dyad establishes and maintains successful breastfeeding. The focus of this conference is to address identified knowledge deficits and gaps in the support, promotion, and protection of breastfeeding. Our ultimate aim is to increase the provision of human milk to the newborn population, including promoting exclusive breastfeeding.

This conference is intended for all health care professionals who work with mothers and babies, including: physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, lactation consultants, social workers, care coordinators, dietitians, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, and pharmacists. Students are also welcomed to attend.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Develop clinical protocols or guidelines for managing common medical problems that may impact breastfeeding success.
  2. Recognize the impact and influence of the healthcare professional in a women’s decision to provide human milk to her infant. (Pre-conception, Prenatal, Intrapartum, Postpartum)
  3. Describe best practices of handling and storage of human milk.
  4. Identify local, regional, state and national resources to support breastfeeding.
  5. Promote a non-judgmental, culturally sensitive environment that is conducive to learning for patients/parents and the healthcare professional.

Registration

Select the register tab above to complete your online registration by November 13.

This conference is offered at no cost to all health care professionals who work with mothers and babies.
