A series of child abuse identification and evaluation educational programs led by specialists at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU

The Virginia Department of Health Project ECHO® connects community providers with specialists in regular, real-time, collaborative sessions revolutionizing medical education and exponentially increasing workforce capacity to provide best-practice specialty care and reduce health disparities.

This series consists of six 90-minute programs that include a lecture, question and answer period, and case presentation. The series will be offered three times, with a maximum of 30 participants each session.

The first series of the 2021 Project ECHO- Child Abuse and Neglect dates are:

February 17: Soft Tissue Injuries in Child Physical Abuse: Bruises and Burns

March 3:  Intrabdominal Injuries, Fractures and Child Torture

March 17: Child Neglect, Failure to Thrive and Ingestions
Faculty: Michelle Clayton, MD, MPH

March 31: Abusive Head Trauma
Faculty: Robin Foster, MD

April 14: The Response to Child Abuse and Neglect: How the System Works
Faculty: Emily Horne, CPNP and Heather Bland, LCSW

April 28: Child Sexual Abuse
Faculty: Michelle Clayton, MD, MPH

1. To summarize the incidence of abuse and neglect in the state of Virginia.
2. To recognize normal versus normal variants versus abnormal physical exam findings in child sexual abuse cases both pubertal and prepubertal
3. To identify patterns of physical abuse in children
4. To recognize those children who need additional evaluation for internal injury based on their external physical exam findings or other diagnostic testing.
5. To identify the different categories of child neglect
6. To develop an accurate diagnosis based on the history offered and the pattern of injury incurred
7. To describe the healthcare team's role in identifying child abuse and neglect

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, VCU Health is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. VCU Health maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 9 ASWB continuing education credits.
