Overview
The VCU Health Comprehensive Stroke Symposium is committed to advancing the knowledge of the healthcare team in most current concepts and advancements in the care of patients with cerebrovascular disease. As an academic tertiary referral center, VCU Health cares for complex stroke patients, pediatrics to adults, throughout the continuum of care from emergency care to in-patient rehabilitation and out-patient stroke clinics.


Objectives
  1. Discuss interventions that are used to provide the best discharge plan for stroke patients
  2. Differentiate between a swallow screen, a clinical swallow evaluation, and an objective swallow evaluation
  3. Review the evaluation methods for both Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing and Modified Barium Swallow evaluations
  4. Summarize the basic pathophysiology supporting Speech Language Pathologist's diet recommendations
  5. Discuss current evidence for Posterior Circulation Thrombectomy and describe candidacy for Posterior Circulation Mechanical Thrombectomy
  6. Identify unique stroke risk factors for women
  7. Describe how to identify and treat strokes in women
  8. Compare the prognosis for women with stroke compared to the prognosis for men
  9. Differentiate between a posterior circulation stroke and peripheral vestibular lesion
  10. Identify the general differences among aphasia, apraxia, and dysarthria
  11. Integrate and apply knowledge in the context of sections 9 and 10 of the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  12. List the 6 elements of Nursing Assessment of language and speech
  13. Recognize the importance of sex education for stroke survivors
  14. Explain the PLISSIT model used to guide healthcare professionals in the intervention of sex education.
  15. Identify examples of factors affecting sexuality and treatment options
  16. Describe how utilizing a shared care model can improve diabetic patient clinical outcomes in underserved populations
  17. Apply expected foundational requirements for stroke programs at each designated level
