Overview

Workshop Overview
The “essentials of critical care ultrasound” workshop is a unique hands-on experience that exposes learners to the application of ultrasound for the rapid assessment of the critically ill patient.  Guided by experienced faculty, hands-on sessions on live models will focus on the pearls and pitfalls of image acquisition and interpretation as well as the basics of ultrasound-guided procedures. The hands-on sessions will be complemented by didactic lectures to improve the participants' knowledge of the indications, technical skills, and limitations of bedside ultrasound.

What can you expect to learn?

  • Fundamentals of ultrasound technology and basic operation of a portable ultrasound machine.
  • Techniques to perform bedside procedures with ultrasound guidance including thoracentesis and central venous catheterization.
  • Techniques to perform focused diagnostic ultrasound examinations at the bedside, including imaging of the heart, lungs, abdominal organs and lower extremity vessels.
  • Pearls and pitfalls of bedside ultrasound imaging.
  • Practice interpretation of normal and abnormal ultrasound images.


Objectives
  1. Develop baseline understanding of point of care ultrasound
  2. Acquire knowledge of basic ultrasound physics
  3. Learn basics of ultrasound machine controls, operation and probe selection
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of normal and abnormal ultrasound findings
  5. Demonstrate ability to acquire ultrasound images with standard views
  6. Learn to identify and interpret ultrasound images
  7. Learn technical and interpretive limitations of ultrasound
